hosusewares make me happy.

i was at target the other day with some friends. we were collecting all the odds & ends that necessitated the trip in the first place, and then, it happened. we walked through the "home" section. i dont know what it is about them, but housewares make me SO happy. we were looking at various kitchen items, utensils, serving platters, baking tools, and i was just so content. part of me wanted to say, "yes, please. ill take one of everything," and the other part of me had the urge to take everything off the shelves, lay them on the floor, and then roll around in them, similar to the way i wanted to swim in a vault of money like scrooge & his nephews did on ducktales. anyway, here's a shout out for a few of the many things that make me crave that home of my own, where there is a place for everything, and everything, of course, is in it's place. im workin' on it, and until i get there, blog postings will have to suffice.

all things measuring. especially these awesome collapsible measuring cups. they are stackable & storable, and available in a myriad of colors.

ill be honest. i don't know as much about these as i should, but from what i do understand,
all clad is rad.
i mean c'mon. just LOOK at 'em.

the mother of all culinary gadgetry, and one of the loves of my life, please meet... The KitchenAid Mixer. this particular model comes from "Artisan Series," and while i'm not entirely sure what that means, i like it. there are numerous attachments, options and add-ons...hello homemade baby food, linguine, bread, mashed potatoes...the possibilities are endless.

lemme hear a "GooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOO housewares!"

merry christmas from the booths...

christmas day 2007
not only do i enjoy wearing extremely loud and somewhat embarrassing pajamas year round, but around christmas i insist we preserve these awesome fashion statements for generations to come by taking family pictures in them as well. sometimes dad does not partcipate in the loud pajama wearing, and that's OK. we normally find some other way for him to display his christmas spirit. this year it was in the form of a santa hat.

christmas pajama picture 2006 was lost due to my inexperience with my new camera. i dont like to talk about it. at all.

christmas 2005
as you can see, a few years ago dad's christmas spirit was demonstrated in the form of red bobble antennas.

for the record...if my dad were to write a book titled, "the joys of living with six women," he would have a lot to write about. trust me. at least he's a good sport. i've said it before, and ill say it again...there is a special place in heaven for a father of girls.

a new christmas tradition

tonight my family & i settled into the family room after dinner so that we could watch "its a wonderful life." unfortunately the station was acting funny, and because i left our family copy in california, we resorted to watching old home videos. after poking fun at one another and laughing ourselves silly, we decided to put in "The Testaments," which happens to be another one of my most favorite movies of all time. similar to "its a wonderful life" the last 10 minutes or so of this film bring out so many sweet emotions. ones that are hard to give shape or explanation.

at this time of gift giving, i cant think of a better way to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ than to reflect upon his life and beautiful ministry, and most importantly, his gift to each of us--the atoning sacrifice and resurrection, that make it possible for each of us to return to our Heavenly home.

while the characters depicted in this film are fictional, i appreciate the feelings of love & gratitude expressed by "The Believers" throughout the film, especially during the visit of our resurrected Lord, and believe that that could have been what it was like to be in the presence of our Savior. it excites and inspires me to do all that is necessary to have that same opportunity one day.

hmmmmm....i think i may have stumbled upon a new christmas tradition. after all, HE is the reason for this season.

bring on that pecan pie...

maybe its because i love food, or maybe its because i love queen latifa. or maybe its because i love the confidence this song radiates, but i listened to it over and over and over again tonight on the way home. i love it.

despite all the gyrating, the video is even better...thank you HAIRSPRAY and tracy turnblad..."this is just so afrotastic!"

christmas visit to union square

thank you union square for having christmas decorations. this big tree will have to tide me over until i make it to NY during the christmas season to see the tree at the rockefeller center.

graham cracker house night was a huge success. thank you yamashita family for having such a fun holiday tradition. otherwise, this rocking graham cracker teepee complete with a candy corn campfire and teddy grahams snuggled in laffy taffy sleeping bags would not have been possible.

zuzu's petals!

i just watched one of my favorite movies, "its a wonderful life," for the first time this christmas season. im unsure how many times i have seen it in the past, or how many more times i'll watch it before christmas, but i absolutely love almost every single thing about it. (except the part when mr. gower smacks george's ear, but that's beside the point)it has such a great message and always reminds me of the importance of all the blessings that i enjoy in this life. how even the small & seemingly insignificant ones truly are gifts from our heavenly father. it just makes me happy. anyways, i found this clip and had to share it.

its all about zuzu's petals. =)

charity ball

the charity ball in an annual YSA christmas event in our area. we get all dressed up and have a semi-formal dinner & dance and also participate in live & silent auctions. all the proceeds, this year over $3000, are split between the wards in charge to be donated as they see fit. for example, our ward's portion was put towards grocery, shoe & miscellaneous gift cards for our adopt-a-family, a local mom with nine kids. it was a lot of work, but those in charge, including my darling friend sheila, did an outstanding job. it was a great night with a excellent outcome.

quote of the day

a friend of mine reminded me of the following in a recent email:

"...you should never have to apologize about the fact that your history affects you. Our experiences shape who we are and how we act. All we can really do is see how our past, however unique, can shape a better future for us. I know that mine affects me but I know it also gives me a better perspective on what I am looking for as I date. I guess it just means that we get to recognize in ourselves what our "uniqueness" is and use it as a way to draw closer to the Lord. If you are with a good guy, he will understand and have the maturity to know that we all have had experiences in the past that shape how we act and react in dating situations..."

thanks for the reminder.

my grown up christmas list...

there are about a thousand things i SHOULD be doing right now. cleaning, studying, reading, organizing, etc. etc. etc.... and so, im avoiding all of them and sharing the lyrics of an awesome christmas song instead. =) check out michael buble's version. it's my favorite christmas find this season...

"Grown Up Christmas List"

Do you remember me?
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you with childhood fantasies
Well I'm all grown up now
Can you still help somehow?
I'm not a child, but my heart still can dream

So here's my life long wish,
My grown up christmas list.
Not for myself,
But for a world in need...

No more lives torn apart,
That wars would never start.
And time would heal all hearts.
Every man would have a friend,
That right would always win,
And love would never end...
This is my grown up Christmas list.

Why is this illusion called, the innocence of youth?
Maybe only in that blind belief can we ever find the truth.

No more lives torn apart,
That wars would never start.
And time would heal all hearts.
Every man would have a friend,
That right would always win,
And love would never end...
This is my grown up Christmas list.
This is my only life long wish...

This is my grown up Christmas list.

06 December 2007

one of those days.

today during lunch i was in a warm, soft, cushy place.  it was raining, and my classroom was full of kids, eating, joking and just hanging out.  i was busy doing a couple things, but it had a nice, almost homey feel about it.

but then, towards the end of lunch i was rushing to get things ready and and one of my girls came running in to tell me that there was a fight in a the hallway.  i grabbed the phone, called security and then ran into the hallway.  it was full of kids, screaming and cheering on the two boys who were beating the stuffing out of each other.  i started yelling, at them to knock it off.  i soon recognized i was the only "adult" in that long, crowded, blood splattered hallway, and i was a little overwhelmed.  they dispersed for a moment, but then picked things up again about 10 yards from where they dispersed, and about 10 yards further from me.  i went back to call security again, and then ran back down the hallway.  then i heard one of my girls yell, "i got you miss booth!"  uhhhh, no.  not good.  we are NOT supposed to physically separate students when they are fighting, for which i was grateful at that moment. the thought of throwing myself into the middle of all those flying fists was not at all appealing.  my students might be pretty rough, but im pretty certain most of them would never try and harm me on purpose.  if someone did hurt me in front of some of my rougher kids, even on accident, retaliation could be a very ugly, ugly event.  as teachers, our role is for crowd control purposes only.  the fight finally ended, and i continued directing traffic, only to notice the flood of students tracking blood through the rest of the hallway.  sick.  i called the office to have the custodial staff come take care of the mess.

i got my kids to class, and they were absolutely buzzing with excitement.  that made me sad.  i briefly told them i did not want to hear any more about it, and then i gave them their instructions and we headed over to the kitchen.  i stood by the door and reminded them not to step in the blood.  one of my boys volunteered, "yah, because that would be nasty to have blood in the kitchen,"  i agreed, but then mentioned quietly how i wished there wasn't any blood on the floor to begin with.  they got kind of quiet, and just continued filing into the kitchen.

once inside, we enjoyed making our mini cheesecakes.  the fight seemed to be forgotten.  one boy lost his cooking privileges for a week for playing, "you know, one of those death games," with a knife.  "but i was doing it slow!"  i caught some others snorting flour, (and yes, im sure it was flour) which made me laugh & cringe all at the same time.

tough stuff

i was driving to school monday morning and the news report told a story about 3 hayward teens, 14, 15 & 17 years old who stole a bus over the weekend. i cringed and crossed my fingers, but due to my awesome eavesdropping abilities, im pretty certain it was one of my students. the following converstaion ensued upon his arrival to class this morning.

student: sorry i ain been here.....i been locked up. my mom called and cleared it in the office.
me: ok, is everything alright?
student: yah, its fine now.

me: do you have your recipe?
student: nah.
me: well, do you think can bring it in tomorrow so you can still get partial credit? (speaking about an assignment)
student: nah, i cant. i got a meeting with my PO.
me: well ok. lets just get it here as soon as you can.

REALLY? these are KIDS. to top it off, one of my sweet girls, a 16 year old sophomore, just gave me an ultrasound picture of her baby that is due in january. its tough sometimes. i don't quite know how to respond, other than to just let her know that i love her.

04 December 2007

a lasting impression.

maybe its because its basketball season. maybe its because i just bought my warrior tickets. but since im getting pretty used to this whole bearing my soul on blogger.com, i figured, eh, why not?

i believe it was during my freshman year of high school, 1997-1998, that i began watching college basketball. i remember laying on my living room floor watching a lineup of games one saturday morning, and the newscaster happened to be doing a short spotlight on a player from stanford mens basketball team, a bay area native, who had put his college basketball career on hold so that he could serve a mission for his church. i was immediately impressed. the sportscaster spoke so highly of him, and how incredibly intense he was on the court, but never foul mouthed, mean spirited or arrogant as many good athletes can be. the rest of the team were local heroes as well...arthur lee and the collins brothers...i remember reciting all the team stats the mornings after games and often relived the moments, play by play, with the boys in my morning classes. looking back, those are such good, sweet memories.

i was absolutely beside myself when they made it to the final four. i followed their progress the seasons to come, and loved hearing all the praise of their post player, mark madsen. he was my hero. an amazing player, but more importantly, a seemingly good guy with a lot of integrity. it was never a crush, though. not sure why, it just wasn't like that. i was just so impressed with everything that i read or heard about him.

then, my sophomore year, one of my best friends wrote a research paper about pursuing a career as an athlete. he arranged an interview with this stanford star, and once again had nothing but good things to share about him. he ended up also setting up a fireside, where he came and spoke with the youth about his experiences playing at stanford. it was a dinner, and we were able to sit and talk with him. i was so nervous, i could hardly speak. i remember doing a lot of listening that night. he was so kind, and acted genuinely interested in us high school kids, our experiences playing basketball and goals after high school. this picture is absolutely too embarassing not to share. it was taken shortly after the fireside. (please ignore my awesome outfit, bangs, braces and geeky smile. i was only 15 years old.)

i followed stanford's progress in the seasons to come, and was thrilled to hear when my favorite cardinal was drafted to the lakers in 2000. i thought it was so excellent that success had found such a decent human being; someone who had been such an example to me for so many years.

since then i've tried to keep current on stanford sports, but its never been quite the same as watching that final four team. i've always preferred watching college sports over pro...there always seems to be such a pure energy and love of the game...a chemistry & excitement that is hard to match. professional athletes had always seemed to have a such inflated egos, and i had witnessed so many teammates & classmates imitate such behavior, i had no interest in keeping up on such things. as i've gotten older, i understand its just part of the sport, but still.

anyways, jump forward about 9 years from the time that lovely photograph was taken. through the wonders of a little known ecommunity, i stumbled across the profile of my favorite cardinal. so i emailed him. i couldn't help myself. i would have sent it annonymously, had it been posible, but i really just wanted to thank him for being such a great example to me so many years ago. much to my surprise, he wrote back. we exchanged a few emails, a couple phone calls, and even more to my surprise i ended up getting to spend a little bit of time with him one evening when he was in town. he was so many things. respectful, smart, considerate, kind, handsome, appropriate, funny, personable, etc, etc, etc.

why even write about this? im not sure. it was a one time, stroke of good luck on my part and was a number of months ago. but as ive said before, sometimes it's just good to allow all your thoughts to take shape on epaper. does part of me hope that by some strange coincidence he stumbles upon this blog? well, of course. id be lying if i said no. do i think that that is very likely or that it would really matter? not really. i think my writing this is more to publicly remind myself and anyone else who may be wavering in the belief that there actually are good people out there. that people really can be as quality as they seem. my proof happened to come in the form of a my high school sports hero, but one who ended up being, amongst other things, one of the the kindest, most considerate and impressive individuals i've ever met. (and yes, one who changed my perception of professional athletes, as well =)) just a few short hours, two rounds of Coldstone ice cream, and a drive around my hometown. yet somehow, despite the simple agenda, the high expectations i had created over the past 9 years were surpassed. by far....RATS. too bad it was only one date.

needless to say, i'm a new found fan of the minnesota timberwolves, and despite their current record, ill be cheering my little heart out at their game against the warriors in january. what can i say? he left a lasting impression. =)

02 December 2007

lend me your ears and ill sing you a song...

you know you've got good friends when an extremely cute guy walks in the room, and instead of vying for his attention themselves, they point you in his direction and say, "hey, did you see that tall guy?"
