need a better life?

then please click here. make sure to look through the entire site. it is so RAD. i've loved this ad campaign since i was at BYU, and am so glad to see it getting national and worldwide exposure it deserves. with all the yucky, no good, unfun stuff this world can throw at you on any given day, please remember this site and let it be your "pick me up." its been mine on a few occasions.

this organization is also extremely supportive of teachers and schools. last september i wrote in and told them how much i loved and appreciated their sharing such positive messages, and asked if there was any way i could buy some posters for my classroom. they said they do not sell them, but they would send me some for free. i now have these up in my classroom...

and i LOVE LOVE LOVE them.

the janucator

now while this didn't happen at my school, it made me laugh as though it had...

According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem.

A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.

Every night the maintenance man would remove them, and the next day the girls would put them back.

Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night(you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses).

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it.

Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

There are teachers and then there are educators. This man, my friends, was an educator.

THANKS A HEAP.

the officer mentioned that losing control of bodliy functions happens sometimes when there is a lot of adrenaline or when someone is super nervous. i assume both ingredients are present when you commit a crime like burglary. so, next time you find it necessary to defecate in my trash can, bring toilet paper so that you don't have to use one of my book covers to wipe your backside. planning is everything.

love always,
miss booth

ps--remember how you climbed through the window? yah, you left your fingerprints behind. just a heads up.

"whats a lymph node?"

i am about ready to lose it. like throw myself on the ground and kick and scream and cry, lose it. one of my boys, my favorite, (yes i know we're not supposed to have favorites, but i do) just asked me what a lymph node was. i told him what i understood them to be. then he said, "oh, 'cause thats where i have cancer." i couldn't even talk, i just kept nodding and saying "uh huh, ok," as he was talking because i had to pretend like it was no big deal, because he was looking me right in the eye. luckily, i was able to get out of the room before i started crying. he thinks they are going to operate next week, and then start three agressive rounds of chemo right after graduation. he came back later in the day and we chatted some more. about him losing his hair, and how he was mad because it was messing up all his summer plans of playing baseball and going to mexico to visit family. and also how he's a scared. his little boy is due to be born in july. i dont know if he understands. maybe i dont understand. i am so many things right now, and i just wanna give cancer a round house kick in the face. seriously.

not too far from here

one of my friends used this in her relief society lesson last week, and i've loved it ever since. i was listening to it as i was getting ready for church this morning. in my next post ill explain how this has to do with my blessed mother.

Somebody's down to their last dime,
Somebody's runnin' out of time,
not too far from here.

Sombody's got nowhere else to go,
Somebody needs a little hope,
not too far from here.

And I may not know their name,
but I'm praying just the same,
that you'll use me, Lord, to wipe away a tear,
'cause somebody's crying not too far from here.

somebody's troubled and confused,
somebody's got nothin' left to lose,
not too far from here.

Somebody's forgotten how to trust,
somebody's dyin for love,
not too far from here

It may be a strangers fate,
but im prayin for your grace,
that you'll move in me to take away that fear,
cause sb hurting, not too far from here.

Help me lord, not to turn away from pain.
Help me not to rest while those around me weep.
Give me your strength and compassion,
for when somebody finds the road of life too steep.

Lord I'm letting down my guard and I'm opening my heart.
Help me speak your love to every needful ear,
cause Jesus is waiting not too far from here.
Yes, Jesus is waiting, not too far from here.

ok, i hope nobody that reads this knows this lady, because this video is a little hokey. but i think its so much better to HEAR the words rather than read them.

prom

chaperoning prom has been one of the highlight experiences during my time teaching high school. nothing compares to seeing all my kids dressed their best, and they radiate excitement from the moment i is even brought up as a topic of conversation. i learned its not just the girls. i had a number of boys come into my room and pull up pictures of their tuxes and shoes and ties to show me how they, "...'bout to be SO fitted for prom..." its super cute, and makes me love them even more. i also learned that wearing 4 inch heels serves not only as male student repellent, but also doubles as the perfect excuse for not bringing a date..."oh, i just couldn't find anyone tall enough..."

(yes thats right. 6'3'' in heels and my head barely fits under the door frame...)

i wasn't sure i was going to dress up...i already get mistaken for a student, so i figured why not? so, once again cass came to the rescue as my personal stylist. she did such an excellent job, the lady at the bridge tollbooth was so cute when she asked me if i was going to my prom. i told her "yes, as a chaperone." it was kind of funny. it was also kind of funny when i was carrying the crowns to award prom king & queen and the facility security guard congratulated me on winning.

now, the event itself? great. the venue? lovely. the dancing? lets just say the EFY passion patrol would NOT have been proud. it was despicable. i wish i could say that it was during my reign as part of the "adult supervision" that i regulated with an iron fist and put an end to all the suggestive body movements & contact that have recently become excusable in the name of "dancing." i, however, cannot. apparently high school dances are perfect forums for a public, uncouth simulation of such a private act. we were, however, applauded by the facilities director about about the "greatness" of our kids. they were considered to be "even better" than other schools as "no underwear were left behind." (bleh.) despite such vulgar dance floor etiquette, overall, i can't help but agree with the greatness comment. they really are exceptional people.

as the dance ended, we started herding the kids to their respective modes of transportation at about midnight, and reminding them to be drive safe and be responsible. i was chatting with a few of my boys asking them about their plans for the rest of the evening. who would be driving, etc. i told them to have fun, be careful and be safe. the first responded, "oh, you mean like use protection? yah, don't worry ms. booth. i got that. i even got enough for him, too," signalling to his buddy. how lovely. "yah...thats not what i was talking about."

then i moved to talk to a couple of my girls about their plans. it went something like this:
student: ms booth. will you PULLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE put our hotel room on your credit card? we can give you the cash for it right now....
me: hmmmm....NO. no part of me is even considering that.
student: WHY??? fine ms booth. don't worry. we got a plan B.
me: ah, yes. im sure you do. good luck with that.

when the last car came to pick us the last students at about 1:30 AM, one of my boys stumbled out of the car and across the street to give hugs and say hello, but he couldnt even walk straight. we put him back into the backseat of his friends car, told them to go to bed, sent them on their way, and prayed they would make it home safe. and thankfully, they did. they did not remember a lick of it come monday morning.

despite the lack of sound decision making described above, prom was a success. the kids had a good time, looked adorable, everything ran smoothly, and everyone made it back in one piece.

vulnerability.

yes its 2:17 am on a school night and i am awake and blogging, but i just can't sleep. an interesting thing just happened. after spending some time at the gym, my friend and i were talking out in the parking lot. it was pretty late, and then just as we were leaving a 2 cars of guys pulled up and slowly circled us, kind of staring us down, before leaving the lot. there was a weird feeling about them. so we said goodbye and began our separate drives home. i watched in my rearview mirror expecting to see those cars drive back into that deserted lot, possibly a drug deal or something like that, but i didn't see them at all. anyways, i didn't hit any lights on the way out and flew onto the freeway, and got up to speed, about 80 mph. (sorry mom). i was getting ready to exit when i noticed a car coming up extremely fast in the lane to my right. only when they got closer, they didn't pass me, but they slowed down, and turned their lights off, and kept a steady pace to keep their windows diagonal with mine. during my half second glance in their direction i was able to see that it was the same guys from the parking lot 5 minutes ago, and they all had their hoods on and were looking in my direction, which made it even creepier. i wish i knew how to describe what i felt. there was no one else near us on the freeway, and all of the sudden i got the strangest feeling that they were going to shoot me. in those few seconds, as i was trying NOT to look at them, figuring out if i should exit or where i should go, and i was also trying to figure out how i would be able to duck and still keep the car under control if they did pull a gun out. right then, i heard a loud crash at my back passenger window. it scared me. bad. i looked back and saw something smashed all over it, but i couldn't tell if the glass was broken, but ruled out a bullet. nice. i then realized there might be more, so i hit the gas and swerved over to the carpool lane, at the last minute as they were exiting. then i called my friend and told him what happened. he came and met me, and followed me home and helped me identify and clean the broken egg off my car.

now, please do not assume i am a drama queen. i have never felt i was about to get shot. that was a first. guns scare me, and they always have. they create a total sense of vulnerability, and so maybe, having a sense and impression that these ruffians were up to no good, and it was going to involve me, made me feel extremely vulnerable, and so it was an association thing. i dont know. all i know is i felt scared. and vulnerable. and uncovered. and powerless. and alone. and unable. it was something i hope to never experience again. as i drove home, i was scared when i saw lights coming towards me, thinking it might be them again.

i get it. it was just an egg. it was probably just some stoned, twenty somethings with nothing better to do. but it spooked me and i do not like that one bit.

bublemania.

i never understood the crazed fan phenomenon known as "beatlemania."

or the females that swooned over elvis and his gyrating hips.

but then, there was buble.

oh my goodness. im not even sure where to begin. please gaze upon this...

and you may begin to understand why we reacted like this...

kim & she went to a buble show back in september, and swore it was the best concert they had every been to. i've been listening to his music ever since, and got hooked. i swore i would get to his show the next time he was in town. i started looking into spending a long weekend in san antonio to visit dear chrissy and catch a buble show as well. but, neither my wallet nor my school schedule allowed for it. so, when his may 3rd san jose show came up i was so SAD to realize that was prom, and there was no way i would be able to go. with sheila on the phone, we realized he would be playing in san diego the night before, on may 2nd. san diego for a weekend AND getting to see the best concert ever with some of my favorite girls? yes please.

the girls got down there early on friday morning, proceeded to bake in the so cal sun, and then came to pick me up from my afterschool flight. we freshened up, and headed to the show, only to get stuck in horrific traffic. apparently michael buble is a big deal EVERYWHERE. we parked and made it into the arena. the opening act was a semi impressive accapela group called "naturally 7" or something like that. super tired from school, but extremely excited to be at the show, i sat quietly in my seat, taking in the music. i realized that concerts and basketball games have the same effect on me...i enjoy it most when i can just fully concentrate on the whats going on on the floor. so much so, i can't really talk. however, such is not the case for most concert goers, and especially not my dear travel companions. when MB finally got on stage, between the cat calls and other yells, my girls were loud enough to get both dirty looks and to get "shhhhhhhhhh"ed by the old fogies sitting in front of us. ah well. that was only the beginning.

in case you weren't sure, MB is definitely swoonworthy. sheila leaned over at one point and asked..."can't you just imagine him singing your babies to sleep at night?" yes. in fact, i wouldn't mind crawling inside his lovely voice, and napping there myself. i was the MOST excited to hear "everything," which i have loved since the moment i heard it. despite listening to it hundreds of times since then (i do that) i have not gotten sick of it yet. so when he started singing it, my little heart was soaring. until sheila & denise said, "ok, now is when we go." and started running down the bleachers. that equation brought about one torturous moment of indecision before deciding to join them. now, i am not a rule breaker. i am a rule follower. to a fault. and while part of me felt bad for figuring out how to bumrush the guards to get near the stage, most of me was just happy to witness the crooner so upclose and personal. so, by the time we had dodged and ignored all security personnel, we made our way to the stage. i was trying to get some video footage, as i just couldn't believe how close we were, but my hands were quite jittery. then, as he came to our corner, he was so kind as to touch our hands and look into each of our eyes while he was singing "save the last dance for me." WE TOUCHED HIM. kim, however, was not satisfied with his hand, and held onto the man's thigh for a good thirty seconds. as he sauntered back to the other end of the stage we were in hysterics. for a moment, i thought kim & i might collapse into one anothers arms. kim just kept holding up her outstretched hand screaming, "i touched his THIGH!!!!" his band members were dying. we looked like such baffoons. yet, somehow, i did not care. he went up and sang with the band and on his way back down to our area of the stage, took a towel and wiped his darling face. i thought to myself, "he is going to throw that towel, and i am SO going to get it." our eyes met, and he threw that sweaty towel into the sea of shrieking women. having six inches on the competetion never hurt in a jump ball, nor in this towel retrieval mission. i snatched it from the air, and was promptly wrestled to the ground, where i recovered into the fetal position, which was helpful. kim threw some guy off me and jeni shouted at another one before it was safe to come up for air with my prize. but but when i did, it was clear. victory was mine, and mine alone, as i have the sweat towel.
