voicemail, bees and the parole task force

i save voicemails. not all of them, obviously, but some. my favorites are the funny ones. i was cleaning out my voicemail mailbox on my phone and came across these three, that i thought were blogworthy. sometimes, phone etiquette between my sisters & i is severely lacking necessary data like greetings, punctuation or goodbyes. but it works. its like one conversation just carries on to another. voicemails are often the same way...

voicemail #1
"chuck norris's mother made medical history when chuck roundhouse kicked his way out of his mother's womb. this later was known as the ceasarean section. hehehehehe. (and then she hung up) --nicole

voicemail #2
mooooooooooom. call me. OH MY GOSH. jackie its you. i meant to call my mom. hahahaha. anyway. call me when you get this. --beana

voicemail #3
"so today on the announcements dr. homer got on and he was like, "attention students, um there is a large swarm of bees outside by the flagpole and you are not allowed to walk by, so all seminary students must go around into the 1300 hall, we will have this cleared up shortly," or something like that, i dont know. and so i went out to go look and i guess there were thousands and thousands of bees all over and the administration was trying to controlling the outside so no one could go through and i was like, "im going through!" and the administrator guy tried to stop me and like put his arms out and it was REALLY funny. thats all. bye." --nicole

while picturing both a frantic high school adminstration and awesome white bee catcher suits, my thoughts drifted to a conversation i had with one of my students today.

student: uh, ms booth, why is like all the police and task forces here.
me:um, im not sure. are there a lot? (we normally have 2 hayward police officers on campus, along with our 3 campus designated security guards)
student: uh, like 7 or 8 cops.
me: yah, i dont know. is something supposed to happen?
student: nah, prolly just tryna get all the gangsters.
me: ohhhhhhhhh.
student: and i heard they takin everyone who breakin parole, too.
me. oh.

i never did hear what all the commotion with the law enforcement was about. we usually don't.

move over disneyland...

you've been replaced.

before my spring break shenanigans i mentioned to a friend that he should join us for a day at "the happiest place on earth," he agreed that while disneyland would be excellently fun, he could definitely think of a place happier...it was no surprise when he simply said, "my father's house," as he has so often before referred to the temple. please understand there is not a pretentious bone in this man's body, and it was so great to be reminded that in addition to being the most lovely places on this earth, temples truly are our fathers home.

last night as i was in a session at the oakland temple, i couldn't help but reflect about what happy places temples really are. everyone that is working is just so helpful and kind, and they have such soft smiles & voices. the officiator in our session even cracked a bit of a joke, and everyone laughed. i dont know why that was significant to me, but it was. maybe just a further testimony that our father in heaven is not only all powerful, but that he may have a sense of humor as well.

after this particular session, i noticed that the celestial room was quite the joyous gathering place...everyone smiling and greeting and hugging one another. it was a little hard to concentrate, as it was so "joyful."

temples are beautiful and happy and lovely and great. its pretty simple. it houses the ordinances that allow us to be elligible for the greatest of blessings. its where families are sealed together. i mean, come on, it doesn't get any happier than that. seeing married couples, young and old, attend the temple together makes me so happy. i can't really explain it. i guess that explains why one thing i really look forward to is attending the temple with my excellent better half, should he ever come into my life (fingers crossed), because i really feel like that is that is a perfect example of what its all about.

quotes of the day

as we drove out of the temple parking lot we saw this sign...and it made me smile for temples all over again.

and

i just came by to say hi. i don wan you to think i forgot about you.

great lengths.

in between visits to the restroom, drinking fountain and locker, students drop by my class throughout the day. after a quick hello, i usually send them on their way so as not to contribute any more bodies to the already existing (organized) chaos that is the foods lab. sometimes, they blend in quite well, and get away with sticking around for a quite some time. when they are finally found out, they have all sorts of excuses as to why i should let them stay...

i found this lovely piece of art shoved in a binder on a bookshelf. it was from one of these "visiting" students last year, and its been making me laugh all day. while it is sweet, and very much appreciated, i believe this demonstration of the microsoft "PAINT" capabilities of a high school football player speaks more about the lengths one will go to get out and stay out of class. its a good thing im not a sucker. usually.

i got two visits today. one from a student who graduated last year, one from this year who withdrew and took the GED. the visits were short, but they brightened me from the inside out.

now, every time i log into my facebook account i am confronted with the following diet plan advertisement:

haunting, really.

quotes of the day

student: skateboadin in da hallway. now dats a d_ _ _ shame.

me: how much cinnamon did you add?
student: 1/4 of a cup
me: ohhhhh ok...well you were supposed to add 1/4 C sugar & 1 TB cinnamon. so now you need to add....(waiting for them to finish my sentence...)
student: a whole h_ _ _ of a lot more sugar??

yah...you owe me a bag a trees for 'dat. i just kiddin ms booth. i not even serious.

the heart part.

i love my job. lets be real...that is not a secret. and my students? i can't talk about them enough. they are quite possibly the best part about my day. i think its because i'm young, but they tell me a lot. i love our conversations, even when it means something else might not get done. i get A LOT of information from them. many times, its a lot more than i ever expected to hear, or am able to process all at once. they tell me about whats going on over the weekends, with their friends and with their families. its the family stuff that kills me.

one of my sweet boys, 17 years old, has it pretty rough. he's already beaten cancer. but on top of that, he was one of my first students that really tried to explain to me "what its like" in his neighborhood. about the front of his home being smattered with bullet holes. about why kids smoke..."because they know they never going to be any different than anyone else." he's told me how he wants so much more, and to do that, he's got to "get away from here," and "go to college," so that he can make something of himself. but also about the need to carry a gun for the walk home, just in case. about a month ago he told me how his girlfriend is pregnant...about how his mom wants to leave his dad, but she wont until she can leave the state and he can't find her. about how its better when hid dad comes home drunk or high, because at least he leaves them alone. obviously, things at home are not ideal. so, when he is absent i panic & worry about what might have happened.

yesterday, we had some down time and got a chance to chat. he was pretty descriptive about a series of events in the recent past between him & his father. nothing earth shattering, by their definition, but seriously not OK. i told him that legally, i had to report the things that he was sharing with me, but even all legality aside, i really worry about him. and that if anything were to ever happen to him that i could have prevented i wouldn't be able to forgive myself. he looked at me, and i could tell he was scared. he told me that wouldn't be a good idea, because it would just make things so much worse. that he's already scared about it all, but that things would get REALLY bad if anyone else knew. i know that following the legal protocol in a situation like this is the "right thing" to do, and meant to serve the ultimate good, and even to attempt save him or his siblings from any further harm, but sometimes the here and now of it all, doing something for "the long run" loses its reassurance.

honestly, sometimes, being in the here and now just rips my heart out. and being terrified about the immediate consquence of something makes it pretty hard to defend its legitimacy. BYU didn't teach me about this part.

oh! hurry guys. family picture by the light house!

she, sorry you are being picture blocked by the asian. love you, jeni. =)

A+ for william fitzsimmons. he sang this rad song at the show, and i couldn't find it anywhere. so, i emailed him on myspace to ask him about it. (dont judge me. i know im dorky) anyways, he wrote back the following message:
very kind of you Jackie! thanks so much :) honored you came out to the show and that you dug the tune. that one is actually called "Maybe be Alright," and it'll be on the new album (due out around late spring/summer). unfortunately haven't recorded it yet... but soon! anyways, keep your eyes peeled and i'll be sure to post anything new on the myspace as soon as it's ready. thanks again Jackie! hopefully see you up in SF again soon. have a lovely weekend. - William
i think everyone should buy his album. mostly because its really good, and also because he is nice. but not because of his beard (bleh)

ingrid michaelson was excellent, also, but you probably could have guessed that.

high school hilarity

my friend jeni is an OT and we trade stories...she gets propositioned by many of her elderly patients, and i get the same from my silly students. you'll see a little bit of that below. never a dull moment, and much too much for just a "quote of the day." some days i wonder if they just think of things to make me laugh, but i cannot complain. here is a sampling of their high school hilarity...

me: you need to be up and doing things in your kitchen. if you have nothing to do, i will find you something...
student: ms booth. i can't. its both my knees. you see, my doctor said i was disabilitated.

student: where the milk at?
me: its in those packages.
student: dehydrated milk? like from a dehydrated cow?

student: ms booth. you ever gonna get married?
me: yes, i hope to.
student: when?
me: um...im not sure.
student: you waiting til you older, huh? like 28?
me: sure.
student: ms booth. how old will i be when you 28? i hope i be 21 by then.

me: why are you sneaking out of my class? you need to get back inside.
student: ms booth! how you know i out here.
me: hahah. i dont know. i just do, i guess.
student: see, its that connection we have.

student: dont mess up the floor! what the - - - - you doing! don't you know ms booth gotta clean that floor!

student: ms booth, how tall are you?
me: 5'11.
student: oh see, now i can't date you. you be taller than me when you wear heels.

student: este es mi novia. o...my amor...(apparently they think i not only can not hear him, nor does he think that i can understand him...)

student: what can we make after cookies?
me: waffles or pancakes or cornbread muffins.
student: (to another student) she seriously needs to marry me.

and this was only TODAY!!!

sprawling out across 5 chairs just because i could. (pictured left)

sheila giving some weird lady the stink eye right after she tried to read my church journal during my momentary absence.

the image of sheila kicking the jetway and slamming the lights off out of frustration, and the fact it is forever burned into my mind.

having to seriously consider not going to bed at all.

04 April 2008

hating myself in the morning...

this morning, like many before it, i was not a big fan of myself. my alarm went off, and i snoozed for at least 45 minutes. i cannot apologize. i love my snooze button. when it was finally time to drag my scowling, muttering carcass out of bed, i promised myself the same thing i always do when i am in that state--that i will go to bed "SO early" tonight. that i would come home from school, get things prepped for the next day, turn my phone on silent and go to bed. sometimes i think this type of self talk is the only way i am able to coax myself out from underneath my covers and into the new day. lets be clear...this momentary grumbling about the sunshine & annoying drone of my alarm does not stem from any desire to escape reality, but more from just the simple pleasure i get from snuggling under my blankets and getting some quality shut eye. that being said, it is something i rarely do. but, once im up, within about 5 minutes, the scowling and muttering has stopped, and im wide awake, both physically and mentally. i'm lucky. that ability is probably the main reason i allow myself to sleep until about 7:10 AM when i need to leave the house by 7:30 AM. don't be jealous.

anyways, from what i've gathered from song lyrics and soap opera teasers, the generally accepted definition of "hating yourself in the morning," for women, has to do with excessive amounts of liquor and/or sleeping with inappropriate men. i understand that while there is the absence of either of these things in my own life, (thank goodness) there are things that can be substituted. personally, i've narrowed it down to two moral indiscretions worthy of such self loathing. they are: staying up entirely too late on a school night and eating delicious things that will amplify my bodacious hips. such are the church girl reasons for "hating myself in the morning," and the reason for my foul demeanor when my phone's alarm clock began to chirp this morning.

ah well. those 5 minutes passed, and i guess it really will remain somewhat forgotten until the aftermath of the next late night bonfire or chocolate iced, custard filled krispy kreme. and im okay with that.

chawlay...

i know it isn't nice to laugh, but "that rilly hutted, chawlay...." is just so stinking cute.

quote of the day

can i do it with my fro out?

unbelievable...

earl spencer, used the phrase "moral spectrum" in the eulogy of his late sister, diana. i have thought of this concept many times since in reference to what we believe and what is believed and practiced in the world around us. today, while perusing the internet after school i became aware that sometimes not only what society deems right & wrong but also important and newsworthy can be a little skewed. for example, it is unbelievable to me that information about

"the first photo of NKOTB to be released in 15 years," not only bumped, but was more accessible than the story and information about the georgian 3rd graders. holy smokes.

as all these ideas were sloshing around in my brain i became grateful for a couple of things.

#1. that we do not suscribe to the idea of moral relativism.
#2. that the yahoo homepage is not my moral compass.
#3. that i don't teach 3rd grade in georgia.

01 April 2008

april fool.

yes, that is me.

i remember growing up and plotting with my mom & sisters of ways to fool people, (ok usually just my dad) on april fools day. i wish i could say we came up with some hilarious and creative pranks, but the only ones i remember ever doing or suggesting, over and over and over again, was a piece of fake bologna from our kitchen set in dad's sandwich and hiding the car around the corner and telling dad that it got stolen. poor dad. but kind of poor us, too, for being so entertained.

please read about other booth family ridiculousness related to april fools day.

there will be a picture of the law & order inspired prank. just wait.

anyways, this year, april fools day for me was the first day back to school after spring break. i slept late, again, and as im sweating bullets on 880, i think, hmmm...this would not be a funny joke if i, the teacher, was late. i made it to school, before the bell, and the day began. not one of my kids played a single prank on me. thank goodness.

however, one of my darling little sisters texts me the following, "i just crashed dads truck. again." now, for the record, my sisters and driving do not typically mix easily or naturally. 2 of our 3 cars have been crashed by 2 of the 4 booth girls who actually drive. one involved a foggy windshield and the saturn coming to a halt against the side of the neighbors parked car, which provided an attractive and portly hole in the dear silver bullet. it gives it personality, i guess. that and a place for other davis high students to stash their fast food trash before making a beeline to class. the other incident involved texting whilst driving my dad's truck. so, upon recieving this text, ill admit my first thoughts were somewhat scattered and panicky. then i remembered.
"april fools, duh." was my text back. go me, for not being fooled.

but then, about an hour later my mom sends me the following text,
"i hate to have to tell you this but Louie (my beloved feline) got out and we can't find him anywhere. we put posters all around and ive checked up at the animal shelter."
no panic. "april fools, right?"
"i wish honey"
the "honey" was the clincher. so i called her and when she picked up i just said, "you're joking, right?" and she was dead silent. (sidenote: i'm pretty sure each of my sisters and my dad have suggested to A. let louie play in traffic B. let louie meet ozzie (our equally disturbed corgie or C. drive somewhere far away....) so, naturally my little louie loving heart skipped a beat. until she burst out laughing. i was not amused. but relieved.

i finished in my classroom, and then i had to do some grocery shopping for school. so i headed toward smart and final, and traffic was particularly bad. i got to my usual turn and then light turned yellow. no biggie, i was catching up with sheila, and not in any huge rush, and not in any mood to tempt the HPD to run me down. as im enjoying our conversation, i look up and notice the light changing from yellow to red. hmmmm. strange. i dont remember a green... totally confused, i realized that i had just sat through the green light. oops. now, i know that i can be a space cadet, but that is a little much even for me. (not that it hasn't happened before.) anyways, my first thought is, "oh well, at least there's no one one behind me..." and then i look in my rearview mirror, where i see a visibly distressed young man with his arms up in the air begin to shake his head. eek. he is not happy. i look again and realize that i KNOW this visibly distressed man. he is my favorite cashier at smart and final. oh no. he is late for work, and the idiot girl in the car in front of him is yakking on her phone and just sat through a green light. go me. a few more minutes passed and the green arrow finally appeared. only the cars to my left had run the red light before and were now blocking the intersection. uhhhhhh....so i slowly step on the gas and i think my cashier friend was afraid i was going to sit through ANOTHER green light and he was going to be REALLY late for work. so he laid on his horn and hit his steering wheel mouthing things like "COME ONNNNNNNNNNN." the cars scooted up and i proceeded with my left turn into the parking lot and into my spot, he following close behind. i think it was at that point he realized he knew me as well. still a little sheepish about my most recent careless phone plus car incident, i finished my phone call and about 15 minutes later went inside. i guess i could have said APRIL FOOLS and told him i did it on purpose, but i don't think he would have been amused. as soon as i got in there we made eye contact. he apologized and said, "i didn't mean to honk at YOU," and i apologized for being such a space case. we are still friends.

today was fun, and it just happened to be april fools day. its funny though, because stuff like this happens to me all the time. =)
