quote of the day
food borne outbreak is when food borne illness spreads quickly in nearby individuals. exsample: in a diner, an old man is eating scrambled eggs unaware they contain salminela. he accidentaly coughs in a truck driver's sandwitch. the truck driver takes a hazardous bite of his sandwitch. --dear student's test answer

gentleman everywhere...
while waiting for my hair to dry before snuggling up for the night, i came across this little gem. i kind of just ignored the kennedy hairdo segment (as i dont really have an opinion on it) but i loved the list. loved loved loved it. and im not even from the south. i'd guess there are many ladies that would agree with me. so, gentleman everywhere, please take note.
how cute...
is this daddy daughter moment?
he didn't even get mad. he just hugged her and laughed and said "thats ok."
it reminds me of when my dad painstakingly got 3 mini fishing poles ready to cast...and when he finally did, and handed each of us back our pole, he then instructed, "ok...throw 'em in!" and we did. all three of those poles. instead of overhead casting, we just "threw 'em in." just like dad instructed. only, right. into. lake elizabeth. sorry dad. =)

backrow basics
today we heard from one of my quiet, backrow gamers. in his collage presentation, he'd just finished telling the class how spiderman revolutionized the comic book world because of greater character depth of the antagonists than ever before when he started describing his favorite movie as being "overly cheesy but still WAY epic." this dear student is normally quite the observer, but he absolutely came alive as he told his classmates of all the exciting parts of his self-concept collage, and how they referred back to his love of comic books and video games, as well as yoda and darth vader, "because it might be lovely and crazy and romantic, but i really believe that good should overpower all." everyone was so attentive, and quiet and kind. i was so proud. of both my presenter and his audience.
addendum: after reflecting on this experience over the last little bit, i remembered that this is not entirely accurate. i did catch two of my senior boys giving each other the mocking, smiling "really?" looks. i gave them a look as well. they quieted their expressions and got through the presentation attentively and respectfully. in the end, everything was fine. but i was nervous for a minute.

dad + music = awesome.
driving to school today i heard higher love by steve winwood (who, btw i pronounced "stevie" winwood until being corrected this summer. how embarassing.) some music just reminds me of my dad. usually it was popular anywhere between 20 and 30 years ago...and i can either recall him singing along with the radio or doing some funky (albeit totally reserved) white boy dance moves. this song is no exception. he does this thing where he kind of punctuates the rythym of whatever song we're listening to with deliberate head bobs and non-fluid movements his hands...and for some reason it reminds me of sebastian from little mermaid. which, i think is pretty awesome.

high school happenings
i was walking to the front of the room right after the bell rang and i noticed that someone kindly placed a condom on my tardy log. i did a double take and then casually turned to see if any of my kids were watching. and, of course they were. so i ignored it and proceeded with the lesson. i got them started on their activity and then went back and quietly threw it in the trash, without any comment. some things deserve to be talked about. and then, there are other things, that i think kids set in motion for shock value or to be funny or create a stir. i felt this was one of those things. so, to their quiet dismay, we didnt even talk about it.
