quote of the day
dear student: this about to be a battleground.
me: what do you mean?
dear student: people be crazy.
he went on to explain to me about the impending social disturbance taking place on our campus. there have been multiple racially motivated fights on our campus lately. yesterday's being the most noteworthy. so, apparently, that meant things were going to go down today that involved lots of high energy, angry teens, some of whom would supposedly be carrying guns, knives, etc.
being the tattletale that i am, of course, called & emailed my admin immediately after learning the information. they followed up.
extra security was hired yesterday, and two hayward patrol cars were pulled up directly outside the principals office. no one was allowed out on bathroom passes. the bell schedule was skiwampus. and only some of the kids knew what was going on. i was grateful for the pouring rain, because it forced all of the kids into large, supervised, indoor areas, where typically, violent behavior can be tempered, prevented or just controlled a lot easier.
so, nothing happened. (i hope "nothing" keeps happening and that the whole ugly thing dissipates.)
but school was closed and students were ushered out the gates as soon as the last bell rang at the end of the day. teachers were ordered to leave campus immediately, and so, without planning for it i locked the door, turned out the lights and came home.
happy friday.

quotes of the day
dear student: miss booth....are you pregnant?
me: um....no.
dear student: oh.
me: thats ok. i think i have some stuff in my pockets. (i was wearing a hoodie under my apron.)
dear student: (awkward laugh)
me: it will probably be a little while before i have any kids
dear student: ah. wish i could say the same. i have him (referring to his 2 month old) all weekend.
me: oh wow. what are you guys going to do?
dear student: nothing.
me: (awkward laugh)
later, i had this same student in my room working on make up work during lunch. this happens often around this time, as grades will be posted next week. then, my classroom door opened and i heard the following:
me: um....no.

HUAIIII MESSSS BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH!!!!!!
this greeting has come a few times a week ever since i did the cookie giveaway to get the word out about my new course offerings for next year. he has come in to check on sign up forms and to find out about class curriculum, and again, when those sign up forms will be sent out. today, i assured him the forms haven't been distributed yet, and that when they are, i'll help him get signed up so he can be in the class next year.
he thanked me, VERY enthusiastically, paused, and then left.
he is darling. and it warms my heart how excited he is about the "life skills" class i'm piloting next year.
the other student in the room sat quietly and worked.
when the door shut my other student said, "them kids be so respectful." it was thoughtful, and appreciative.

i nodded, smiled and agreed. it was a sweet moment.

quote of the day
this ain no tennyson high kitchen, this be hells kitchen. this serious. --dear student
freshman to senior. lazy to baby.
dear student: ms booth! (motioning me over to him.) look:
i looked into the stroller and saw the most adorable baby boy. despite being distracted by such a good looking baby, i was reminded that kids having kids is weird. then i remembered the conversation this particular student and i had 4 years ago about lazy the hampster, and i realized that while 4 years is a long time in some ways, its not nearly long enough in others.
