so proud...

my little sister nicole sent me this link via text. make sure you read the photographers blurb at the bottom.

"modest is the hottest" is one of my favorite quotes, and im pretty sure she heard it from me first. just kidding. really though, im so proud of all my sisters for the excellent, beautiful and strong young women that they are. they are rad, whether or not anyone else thinks so, but its kind of fun when someone else stumbles upon their awesomeness.

go sisters. you rock my world.

easter too.

i know i posted this video for christmas,

but is equally as awesome for an easter tradition, too. after all, christmas means what it does because of easter. i know this is just a movie, but no matter how many times i watch it, it still stirs up some serious emotions. when He calls helam by name...my goodness. we are so lucky to know He is real. that he came and died for us, so that we might be forgiven and so that it is possible to live with our Heavenly Father once more. i wish everyone knew that.

spring break....

starts this very moment.

quiet. absolute quiet. it is a different kind of beautiful.

its 3:48 PM and all my kids are gone. the hallways are empty and its quiet. and as beautiful as the quiet is, its a little bittersweet. knowing that i wont get to see or hear them for 10 days makes me a little sad, as i already miss them. as they were leaving and i was wishing them a happy spring break, i couldn't help but adding, "be good! see you soon! stay out of trouble! be careful!" i felt like the dorkiest teacher on the block. they, however, were not at all surprised.

lets be real. the troublesome activities i worry about some of my kids being involved in are of the R rated variety -- drugs, immorality, violence, gang activity-- none of which take a full 10 days to incubate. and, im sure many are involved in each of these during regular school days, if not right on school grounds. but, here's the thing, when i see them every day, in class, plugging along and for the most part doing what they are supposed to, it alleviates my perception of the stinging reality they face. when i can't see them and talk to them and "know" they are OK, i worry.

aside from being a nervous nelly, i appreciate the time off. i've realized that teachers pretty much have the raddest schedules ever. seriously. and really...between the roaring trash can fire and the dirty looks and four letter words actually shot in MY direction this week, my patience needs a little time to regenerate.

thank you, spring break.

bothersome.

one year ago, a man drove up to a church in oakland, began to argue with his estranged wife, and then proceeded to pump her body full of bullets. one of my girls, 14 years old, was there and witnessed the entire thing. she came in on monday morning and just stood in front of my desk. i asked her how her weekend and she said, "all bad." it made the news and the newspapers, even a year later, but the fact that such events are becoming common place is extremely bothersome. even a year later.

march madness

this weekend we played a 3 on 3 tournament with the two local wards. bringing back the perfect st. patty's theme name, "get lucky" we played in style. our $5 uniforms included baseball socks and shamrock t-shirts (thank you old navy.) it was SUPER fun, despite the fact i am STILL sore.

this is our team, "get lucky." shawn, david, cass, me, cam, joshy, and terrill, who is apparently unsure he wants to be in our team picture. yes, you counted right. we insisted on have 7 people on a 3 on 3 team. what. we were out of shape and needed subs. don't judge.

i only got clobbered twice and have the rasberries, bruises and scratches to prove it. whoever said that boys would play easy on me because i was a girl was a liar. thats ok. now my knees and elbows can be confused with those of a 7 year old boy that just fell out of a tree, which, obviously, is what i've ALWAYS wanted.

cass & i played basketball & volleyball together through junior high & high school. shawn was just recently added to our roster. he's a good addition. i think we'll keep him.

we did not get lucky in terms of our winnings in this tournament. lets just say we didn't get first. it was really fun, and i can't wait for "get lucky III" next year.

in case you were wondering...

me & my DIY bang trim are now the proud owners of a US passport!!!!

no really, we are.

now, we can become FULLY ecstatic about the European backpacking extravaganza that await us this summer. seriously, i can't wait and will be blogging much more about this in the months to come.
VIVA EUROPA!

until then, all i'm gonna say is, "I HAVE A PASSPORT!" with an intentional, well placed and assertive exclamation point.

the cats pajamas.

anyone who has spent a fair amount of time with me knows that i am somewhat of a pajama connoisseur. i love them and think they extremely necessary. much to the dismay and embarrassment of some, i wear them around the house, sometimes in public, but mostly to bed. over the years i have amassed quite the collection.

when you really think about it, flannel pajamas have it all figured out. they are, among other things, bright but wholesome, fun but comforting, warm but functional & silly but modest.
go jammies.

that being clarified, let it be here be stated, on blogger.com, that i aspire to be more like my flannel pajamas.

red letter day

im not entirely sure where the phrase, "red letter day" comes from, but i'm pretty sure it's a good thing. and it was the first thing that popped into my mind when i came into the kitchen this morning to find that our purchase order had gone through and that our department chair had bought a few essentials.

mixers, cutlery, can openers, waffle irons, blenders & cookware. sigh.

i know i know i know. you get it. i love housewares. but six new sets of each of these items? it was like christmas. bless the purchase order that was approved prior to the billion dollar education budget cuts in the state of california. good lookin out.

journals, emails and jungle gyms.

once i regained my composure and i realized what i had done last night i called my mom. our conversation went a little like this:

me: mom. i just did the most most embarrasing thing of my life.
mom: oh no...
me: mom. i just wrote a really embarassing journal entry, and accidentally emailed it to someone else instead of myself.
mom: about what?
me: guess.
mom: (silence)
me: (laughing) mom. i am so embarrassed i am sweating.
mom: i think you should send it to me.
me: no, it's so embarrassing i can't even have you read it.
mom: all i can think of is that letter you wrote.
me: i know.

at glenmoor elementary, the "upper graders" were given the opportunity to be "sixth grade helpers." our sixth grade helpers responsibilities were to lead their younger schoolmates to the cafeteria, direct them to the appropriate lunch line and then sit with them while they finished their lunch. sometimes they played on the little kids playground with them during lunch & recess. it was a great system. i think it helped prevent the younger kids from getting bullied, and it provided a leadership opportunity (read: a way to get out of class and go to lunch early) as well. my sixth grade helper's name was jamie. he and his friend were great 6th grade helpers. they were always on time, so we usually got to be at the front of the line, and jamie even made bird nest villages out of the pebbles by the dugouts with us during lunch. he was a big deal.

i decided that i needed to tell him how i felt. when my mom saw the following scrawled in my neatest 6 or 7 year old handwriting:

dear jamie,

i love you.

love,
jackie

she did everything in her power to convince me otherwise. but, i could not be convinced. she kept telling me she didn't think it was a good idea, but i did not listen.

i brought the love letter to school the next day. jamie & his sidekick came and picked us up and led us, single file, to the cafeteria. as soon as we were in line, inside the doors, i wordlessly handed him this profession of my love and then returned to my place in line, where i quickly turned around to watch him open it. he unfolded it, read it, looked up at me and then began to laugh. loudly. he showed his sidekick, who also started to laugh, uncontrollably. they continued to laugh as he crumpled up the letter and threw it into the trash.

i wish the story ended when that love letter hit the trash, but it does not. this was towards the beginning of the year. i obviously had not thought through the, "what-if-this-does-not-go-as-planned," scenario. i failed to realize that i would have to see jamie & his sidekick every day, regardless of his reaction to the aforementioned love letter, for the rest of first grade. and i did. sometimes i would still get hot lunch from the cafeteria and sometimes i would bring lunch from home. it should go without saying that jamie & i did not make bird nests anymore by the dugouts. instead anytime we ran into one another on the playground, he would get down on all fours, and chase and bark at me. not wanting to be in a situation that necessitated my running for an extended period of time (yes, even then) i would run to the nearest jungle gym and climb to the top. i would balance at the top of those climbing structures, mortified, while jamie would sit at the bottom, barking on all fours, until the freeze bell rang. these shenanigans continued until i realized that if he couldn't see me, he couldn't chase OR bark at me. so, i utilized my most obvious resource. i began to eat my lunch in the girls bathroom. i did this for the rest of the year until jamie graduated and moved on to junior high.

looking back on this incident, ive realized a few things.

a. jamie was a wierdo.
b. eating in the bathroom, while incredibly unsanitary, was my saving grace.
c. i could have spared myself a lot of embarrassment had i only listened to my mom.

now, while the consequences of my email slash journal fiasco didn't involve someone barking at me or chasing me on all fours, (yet) for a few moments last night i felt like that sheepish first grader in the lunch line, with wide eyes & shallow breathing, able to articulate little more than a shaky, "oh no..." the idea that someone would read and could possibly post the thoughts & feelings meant only for my own reflection made me want to run away to somewhere far away. where there weren't any journals, emails or jungle gyms.

those few moments passed. but i sent this frantic email first:

Jackie to SmugMug Help at 12:21 am

i just did something really stupid. i emailed my smugmug email a very personal journal entry.

i know that this email address can be used to email and post pictures to my site but i've never used it before. anyways, i would love it if no one ever read that, and especially did NOT post it to my smugmug.

can someone tell me how to access and delete this email? i'm really freaking out about this and i hope someone will somehow respond soon.

Sebastian to me at 5:11 am

Hi Jackie,

Thank you for contacting SmugMug. Don't worry, this email isn't read by anyone. These emails are automatically processed and if the email password matches and there's a photo attached, it'll be uploaded to your email gallery. Since you don't have such a gallery, it didn't work out and the email has been deleted all ready. :)

I hope this has helped. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Best Regards,
Sebastian

and yes, sebastian rocks my world. im still pretty embarrassed, as i think this tech support all star MIGHT have read the yearnings of my soul. but oh well. at least he didn't start barking.

NoooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo!!

i feel as though i might pass away.

instead of keeping a handwritten journal i write myself emails. i write the date as the subject and store & archive them, and pat myself on the back every time i do so. this has been an incredibly efficient and no brainer way for me to keep a journal.

UNTIL NOW.

i just poured out my heart and wrote a really embarrassingly detailed journal entry and emailed it to someone that is NOT MYSELF.

i feel incredibly stupid. and embarrassed. and like i want to crawl under a rock and stay there. forever.

this weekend

was productive.

i enjoyed a "family dinner."

i grounded myself. did laundry and cleaned my room instead of going to a party.

i preserved a DIY haircut for generations to come through a passport photo. awesome.

i got equipped (NICELY, i might add) for 72 hours worth of emergency. all im going to say is it pays BIG to be friends with the girl in charge. that and hovering around the supply table.

i learned how to tie a quilt. i get it. it's criminal that im 24 and never tied a quilt. well, now i have.

i shot around to practice a little for the upcoming 3 on 3 tournament.

i sighed over the "i ache for grace" lovliness of david duchovny in Return to Me.

i slept in.

i was introduced to the wood chopping scene in Win a Date with Tad Hamilton.

i participated in an absolutely FULL-to-the-brim endownment session at the oakland temple.

i sundayed.

i taught RS.

i booked my flight to london.

mild hysterics

i have been stifling mild hysterics all day.

on the way to school today i found myself driving alongside a green 1995 taurus wagon on spinners. think hyphy soccer mom.

plus

yah, i almost rear-ended the guy in front of me. NOT because i was ghostriding the whip, but mostly because i was trying to take a picture with my phone. unfortunately i couldn't get close enough, and the spinners were pretty big and were moving so fast they were reflecting a lot of that glorious california sunshine. you'll have to use your imagination.

if that wasn't enough at my faculty meeting after school the following exchange occured during an instructional read-aloud about the district mandated "think-pair-share" learning strategy.

teacher: would anyone like to describe what comes to mind when they think of the lowest or deepest sound they have ever heard?

teacher volunteer #1: it makes me think of tibetan monks chanting.
teacher volunteer #2: the lowest or deepest sound i have heard is stampeding elephants.
volunteer #3: (our new principal.) well, my friend kian (a chemistry teacher) said the lowest sound he has ever heard is a BONG.
(awkward silence)
volunteer #3's partner, the science teacher: i said GONG.

at this point, i absolutely lost it, as did the rest of the faculty. my mentor & and i were crying. i'm not sure our principal knew what was so funny, but i couldn't hold it in. once the rest of the staff composed themselves, the teacher in charge continued, "well, if no one else has any other burning statements to be shared...." and the laughter started all over again. all i can say is THANK HEAVENS, because without the mention of drug paraphanelia, this faculty meeting was bound to be excrutiatingly long and boring. list making and MASH even lost their normal appeal.

after the faculty meeting i headed to the grocery store to get lab supplies, and as i was finishing up at the register i glanced behind me to see a portly caucasian gentleman (think chris farley with long black ponytail and beard) donning a t shirt that read "westside connection" with the following graphic:

i'm not sure why, but this struck me as incredibly amusing.

luckily, i was able to contain myself until i got to the car.

04 March 2008

home again, home again, jigiddy jig....

with all my recent travels, and plans for more to come, i've thought a lot about the idea of home. my beginning of my definition came about through an interesting journey. one that im sure is not over.

my family moved from my hometown, where i lived for 15 years, shortly after i graduated from high school. which means that coming home for vacations and breaks was totally different than i'd imagined. i got to see my family, (YAY) but all other familiarity was lost. no familiar streets, hang outs, church buildings, sports events, nothing. a tad bitter about the loss of my california zip code, i snobbishly refused to call UT "home" for a long time. it was just the place where my family and all my stuff resided.

over the years me & UT have become bros. thankfully, i finally got over my debbie downer attitude about not living in the rocking san francisco bay area and began to recognize the beauty that existed around me, even in happy valley. CA was full of wonderful memories and people that were dear to me. thats why it felt like home. but the definition of home soon began to be linked really closely with the people who meant the most--my family. where ever they were, that was home.

however, by the time me & UT were on good terms, i moved back to CA to start teaching. it seemed that no sooner was i back within driving distance of the "home" that i longed for during snowy winters and scorching summers, that my little world began to crumble around me. i was living in a darling community in san mateo, but it soon became apparent that my living situation needed to be changed immediately. within a span of a few hours on a saturday afternoon, i packed everything that i owned into the back of my car, and headed across the bay. i remember being on the san mateo bridge and glancing in my rear view mirror and seeing all my day to day necessities and belongings haphazardly piled upon on the seats behind me. hmmm. i currently do not "live" anywhere. i do not live in my apartment. i do not have a house. i do not have a place. i'm kind of homeless. this is weird.

with my parents 800 miles away and a teaching contract that needed to be upheld, one of my best friends family took me in. when i pulled up at their house, i found myself unable to get out of the car. i felt disconnected. like this couldn't really be my life. i just kept seeing all that i owned in the back of my car thinking, "at this moment, i currently "live" in my car." i paused a moment longer and then i grabbed my pillow and a blanket and began to walk inside. my friend's parents came out to greet me. his mom put her arm around me and then helped with my bags and his dad hugged me and said, "welcome home," with a little bit of cheesiness, but a lot of love & sincerity as well, before unloading the rest of my belongings. they took me inside, unpacked my things and got me settled. that dear family, their love and their house was "home" to me for the next few months.

i remember thinking and writing A LOT during that time about what home & family meant to me. what they were, who they were, why they were important, how they were defined. one day i was staying with that kind family, i decided to wash my car and i asked for a rag & a bucket. they directed me to a very specific spot in the garage where i found a bucket, soap, a shammy and some towels for drying, and suddenly, i was awestruck. in that moment i REALLY wanted a house, mostly so that i could have a garage where i could assign a very specific place where the car washing supplies could be found. somewhere where i could ALWAYS find them and wash my car to my little hearts content. i yearned for it. it was really kind of silly, but really real, as well. it was an example of something stable and unchanging, which is exactly what i ached for. luckily, i did not heed that craving and run and buy a house of my own, but the definition of home had been chiseled yet again to reveal another facet--stabilility.

i've realized that both CA and UT feel like home. i have my family--mom, dad & the girls in UT and my friends here in CA. my mom texted me the other day, "i'm so glad you have such great friends to be your family out there." and she's so right. they really are. im one blessed little girl to not only have a real family AND a friend family, but also a place to call home where ever i go.
