the "too late love-fest"

"....maybe we can just say to ourselves, "Huh. Now that this person is gone, I find myself remembering all of the good associations and memories, rather than the bad. I will use this feeling to remind myself to show more appreciation, kindness, and understanding for the people who are still in my life."

this is an excerpt from THIS blog. i have no idea how i found it...possibly a google reader suggestion? but its definitely read worthy. she is extremely witty and entertaining. this particular excerpt was written about the michael jackson media frenzy this summer, BUT i have been revisiting the ideas from this post a lot in the last few days.

sometimes it really is too late to say "i love you," or "i think you're really cool," or "thanks for being so great" or "you're a really good example" or "remember that one time we played on the piano together at grandma's? that was really fun." i'm pretty ripped up for all the "i wish i had ________ 's" i've been mentally penning these last few days. the list seems to keep getting longer, with no way to check off a single item as completed. most definitely a list makers nightmare.

i know he's OK. and taken care of and without pain. and busy. and sometimes i get the feeling that he knows everything that i wished i had said, but didn't, while he was here.

"wait!"

its late.  and im tired.  but the little hamsters in my head aren't giving me any relief.

two people that i knew left this world, today.  one was my sweet cousin.  one was my dear friend's mother.  i'm sure there were many others that left this world today, but these are two people that i knew.

as a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints i know that this life is but a small, quiet corner of the whole beautiful picture of our existence.  i know that we lived before as spirits, that our life here involves both a spirit and a body.  i know that we must die, but that through the atonement of our savior Jesus Christ that our bodies and spirits will be reunited, and will thereafter be inseparable, meaning we will only experience death once.  that this isn't the end.  but despite that knowledge, i also know that when i someone leaves this earth it wraps my heart & mind in the most striking set of emotions.  it's as though death and i were having a conversation and all i can seem to muster is a most earnest, whispered, "wait!"  and then, an instant regression occurs....i feel like a very small, very young, very vulnerable child in a very, very large empty room and that i'm looking around with very large, questioning eyes.  it's like i want to plead my case, and the only defense i can muster is,  "but, i wasn't ready..."  it seems that whenever and however death comes, i'm never ready.  not for the sudden departure or for the void that will be left in the departed's place.
